First Semster done

Ok folks we got done with our competencies this week and i passed with flying colors on the written and the oral boards. I wish i could say the same for my partner she did good on the written but did not make it through the orals and there was a bad order written in the chart for o2 to be given at 4lpm via NRB and she did it and set it up on a humidifier and the other order was for a MDI Q4 with spacer she gave the patient a SVN treatment. I think she really did not care because she told every one she was dropping the program. So far out of the 4 students with me for the first day of clinicals one is dropping and two more are talking about dropping. I looks like soon i might be the only one in my clinical group at clinicals. so I got the final exam left and I will be done. plus if i was not under enough stress with school i am moving into a new apartment at the first of the year.
Have a great weekend all.

Gearing up to final exams

Hi all is a quiet night in the inner city medical center, the admissions to the telemetry floor has been light tonight. We are pushing into the final few weeks of the first semester of RT school. We are covering O2 delivery devices and more practice on competencies this week getting all the fledgling RT students read for their final practicals. If we all make it we are moving on to hospital clinical's next semester and class room and lab classes too. I am so glad I got all my general education classes done so I only have the RT classes to worry about. To all the RT's out there thank you for your support and your friendship you are a great group of people and I am proud to be able to call myself one soon
take care RT/Medic

Giving thanks

This year I have allot to give thanks for, I made it through another semester. My family is doing good and they are healthy which is another reason to be thankful. We got three weeks left to this semester and I really don't think some of my class mates are ready to provide actual patient care. Some still have issues setting up a Neb treatment. i got a feeling half of the class will not make it through the next semester. They need to start taking this a little more serious or they will wash out. I will do my best to offer advice and words of encouragement but that's all I can do. Till next time take care all.

Its a wonderful night

Its a wonderful night here in te big city. Works been busy but not too insane. We get to do death watch now, if you never heard of it well death watch is where a very sick person who is a DNR is placed on a telemetry monitor so you can tell the nursing staff when the patient expires . it is a real waste of resources and cost the patent money too. But what can ya do lol. school is going great gearing up for clinical's soon and we already had one drop and 2 more stated they are not coming back for the next semester. I am so looking forward to it. I wish i was doing them already, but you must walk before you can run. But i am in such a good mood nothing can bring me down tonight.

Friday night whheeeeeeeeeeee

Hello its Friday night and its pretty slow here in my little world. The Kids are behaving themselves and no trips to the ED to fix the monitor so its been a slow night I have one Peds patient who's been bradying down but nothing too bad. School is going good just hectic and my personal life seamed down the tubes. but when it seams the darkest a ray of light always shows up. I made a new friend tonight. we laughed and talked for a while and i have to admit I had a great time. Life is good with new friends. Its funny how when it seams like one chapter in your life is closing a new one always begins. I am looking forward to many new experiences coming up in the next few months with clinicals starting and making more new friends.

ABG Class

We did an all day class on acid/base and who to read ABG's In my RT class this week. We could of gotten it done in half the time if some of the class paid attention to the instructor and not sending out text messages on there cell phones. Then they all seamed to have a the same response " I dont get it can we go over it again". LOL It was so frustrating They did the same stuff at the end of last week in the classroom part of the class but over the weekend it all just disappeared from a few members of the class. then we got to practice drawing ABG's. the look on ones students face was priceless. I heard I did not sign up for this class to stick someone with a needle I just want to do breathing treatments.
So it was time to stick the little rubber arm a very few of us got it on the first stick :) the rest it took a little digging and a couple of resticks. then there was just one left. I don't think they ever held a needle in there life before never mind use it. It looked to me like she used the the Jason or the Micheal Myers technique on the arm she took the needle in hind like a killer holds a knife in the slasher movies and drove it home with so much force she buried the needle all the way in the arm. It looked like the most violent IM injection ever given. I did my best not to laugh and after a moment of shock we waled her through it and she did allot better the second time around. I know she will do wonderful as will most of the class they just need to keep there confidence up and we will form into a tight well tuned group of RTs.

Yeah, dude you taught her a lesson

Tonight at the world famous Inner City Medical Center yours truly got a tour of the new and Improved Emergency Department. I got to see the new state of the art trauma and resuscitation rooms as well as the RT area. While i was down there we had three trauma come in at the same time. two were GSW to the chest and back by sumdude he really gets around that guy i wonder how he does it. But the golden idiot award goes to the third patient. Mr IQ was having a fight with his girlfriend and in an alcohol fueled moment of wisdom he decided to teach her a lesson. By pulling his own ear off with a pair of pliers. yep that's right folks he grabbed his own ear with a pair of pliers and yanked it off. it was not a pretty picture. and I'm not talking a little chunk it was the whole ear. boy I sure do miss EMS. It goes to show you tools and alcohol don't mix.

double shot of RT love

well folks that right two post in one night I just finished dinner (alone) its just not as much fun to have dinner without good conversation. oh well maybe tonight will be a better night. well we are getting ready to do acid base and ABG interpretations in RT class. I love reading them its something new so I enjoy the hell out of it. I cannot wait till we start drawing them. I have been luck to have a lot of IV starts and a good training in the art of intubation. In my paramedic training was paired up with an Anesthesiologist who started off as a Paramedic in Germany and worked his way up to a flight medic then to a Anesthesiologist. He was a ball buster but he trained us well he wanted us to be able to manually control an airway because there will be people you cannot intubate with normal means. To bad the operation he had me do my manual airway was almost an hour and a half long. but i did it. He then taught me how to handle all types of airways and how to intubate in routine situations and in emergent situations. I really owe him a debit of gratitude. He got me interested in pulmonary medicine and planted the seed that become the dream of me becoming a Respiratory Therapist.

The start of another weekend

well folks its 11:34 on a Friday night and i am sitting in our spacious offices and enjoying another fun filled night in cardiology land. I am sitting here waiting for my dinner date to arrive and listening to the heart monitors Bing and bong in an attempt to drive me insane. I am waiting for grades to be posted for midterms Grrrrrrrr. I cannot wait to start hands on clinical we are doing stuff i am already competent in from my years of EMS so its hard for me to be optimistic when I am rehashing old stuff. at least i get to help some of the students with no medical training learn to do vitals and physical exams. well my friends I am off to the waiting area for my date. take care

Bad way to end a great weekend

It was a great weekend in the Inner City Medical Center. We had a great crew for the most part on this weekend and I had some wonderful dinner conversations and I learned a lot about my favorite dinner companion over the weekend:). Sunday night was great, we had a great shift only a few admits to the Peds floor Most of the little ones were stable, So I was living large and happy. The Monitoring system actually stayed online for the night and I was looking forward to class. I walked to the parking garage listening to some Linkin Park and I felt like I was on top of the world. I got in my car and was heading home to shower and eat before class. As I was pulling out another vehicle decided it wanted to occupy the same space my car was in and I got nailed. My car was hit in the driver side front fender and push about 10 feet up the street. Thank god No one was hurt and the other cart had only minor damage. My Dodge looks like its totaled. I could barely put into park. well it was not a great way to start the week but I know it will only get better. Stay safe everyone and have a great week.

Another week in the Med center

Hello all,
Well im finishing up homework and getting ready for another fun weekend in Peds cardiology land. I saw a post about Patient reps and patient complaints . We had to deal with one over the weekend we had a lady who's child we were taking care of from an MVA she was hurt too but the child was far worse. She came out and said " I am in severe pain I need pain Medication give me something. we were like sorry you are not a patient here we cannot do that. she stormed back to the room. she came out 20 minutes later yep you guessed it demanding pain meds for her. we told her the same answer as before but I guess she did not understand us. Well guess what an hour later her babydaddy comes out of the room looking all thug like and say" yo give my babymomma her pain meds " I just rolled my eyes. we explained to him, sir she is not a patient we cannot give her Medication. well he walked off mumbling something . not ten minutes later patient rep is at the nurses station wanting to know why we are withholding a patients pain medication. we explained to her she not the patient her child is. hmmm it should of been a clue when she come to he pediatric floor but I ll give her the benefit of the doubt. sh she went into to room and talked to them it turns out she has a prescription of pain killers from the ED there just did not want to run out to the pharmacy to get it filled they figured we would give them the meds because she had a prescription LOL nope soory Rite drug is just down the street
man some people are just to lazy. till next time stay safe........................

survived another class

Well we survived another class and its off to A+P tonight. we did initial PT interviews and how to set up T nebulizers. and we started on the mountain of paperwork we have to fill out to do clinical's on real people. I signed less paperwork when I closed on my house. You can see little groups forming in the class. I like to call them SRT Pods Student Respiratory Therapist Pods. some what like a Pod of Killer Whales just not as dangerous till we learn to do AGB's then all bets are off. One other thing i noticed I am the grand old man of the class. we were filling out paperwork and I saw the date of birth of the SRT next to me. I was 20 when she was born LOL i think the closet to me in age other than the instructor is 27. well they say with age come wisdom well we will find out. the sleepiness goes on................

I got class all day tomorrow after working all night its going to be a long day. well all I'm off to spread sunshine and sleep deprivation thought the hospital. Friday night bluesssssss

well its OMG its late Friday night at the Inner City Medical Center and its been a good Night so far. I am sitting here waiting for my favorite Friday night dinner companion to show up for some wonderful conversation. like Tom Petty said "the waiting is the hardest part". The only thing that was interesting so far was the announcement one of our techs made at the beginning of our shift. we will refer to him and Mr. Bitter. Mr Bitter walked into the office tonight and out of the blue he announced," I am carrying a digital recorder and if any of you use any profanity tonight i will go to management and have you fired. this is from an grown man who cannot do his job but for some reason he is still allowed to perform patient care. OH well it will be fun to see how the rest of my shift goes my dinner "date " is here sleep well everyone

first day of school thoughts

Good afternoon, well I made it through the first days of class and my head did not explode (but if feels very close to exploding) who ever thought up Trigonometry is evil and we will leave it at that. I feel real good about the other classes A+P II looks tough but do able. the first set of clinical for the RT classes should have its name changed to Basic skills lab not clinicals. we will not see a patient for another 5 months. don't get me wrong what we are learning is very Important Like assessments skills , drawing ABG's PPE, we need to learn that but most of the class thought we were going to clinical sites not staying in a lab. I am just happy to be finally in the course and i am ready to move on. well I am off to work see ya all in the morning

Mistakes might make some hospitals broke

Here is a list of mistakes Medicare is not going to pay for anymore.
The rule identifies eight conditions — including three serious types of preventable incidents sometimes called "never events" — that Medicare no longer will pay for. Those conditions are:

• Objects left in a patient during surgery

• Blood incompatibility

• Air embolism

• Falls

• Mediastinitis, which is an infection after heart surgery

• Urinary tract infections from using catheters

• Pressure ulcers, or bed sores

• Vascular infections from using catheters

Is this rule is going to include Nursing Homes too. It should, I have seen a few Patients come from them with UTI's Falls, and Bed sore. You know they will find a way to pass the buck to the other patients. hmmmmm I can see it now I aspirin was 15.99 now at big blue hospital its 99.95 ahhhh the wonderful world of medicine you just got to love it.
